  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- A pleasant surprise about early life in Northern Michigan. : This is one young woman's story of her life in the 1800's. The struggles of island life on Mackinaw, and other islands in the area. So much rich history about the natives and how they had once occupied the islands for fishing then left no trace after leaving for winter. The Mormon story is dramatic and telling. Not so far off as the Jim Jones tragedy. If you're at all familiar with the islands and mainland northern Michigan you will enjoy this look into the history not widely known. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Dr. Sue -- More than a historical memoir: Shipwrecks and delusional Mormon Madmen: Life on a small island in the Great Lakes : This is a book printed under the auspices of the Beaver Island Historical Society. The story begins in the 1800's and discusses a small island near the tip of lower Michigan (Beaver Island), and it's occupancy by the Mormons, especially actions by a delusional leader (James Jesse Strang) who called himself "The King". • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Richard A. Fidler -- A Child of the Sea : Published in 1905, A Child of the Sea is a memoir by Elizabeth Whitney Williams. It contains memories of her life on Mackinac Island, Menominee, Beaver Island, and elsewhere. It provides an especially critical view of the Strangite Mormon habitation of Beaver Island and nearby Charlevoix. While entertaining in its descriptions of wolf attacks, armed conflicts with Mormons, and interactions with local Indians, it is not entirely to be trusted as an honest chronicle of events. For most of the book, Ms. Williams was younger than a seven year-old and her memory cannot be completely trusted. No doubt, as with us all, she depended upon what she was told by others in building her understanding of the world. The book provides a glimpse into the raw world of mid-nineteenth century Northern Michigan, but its perspective must be balanced by views of others--in particular that of J. J. Strang in his Ancient and Modern Michilimackinac. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2009 )

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from S.H. -- Written like a diary : Upper Michigan is now the vacation destination for Michiganders, but what was this part of the state like when it was being settled in the early 1800's? This book, in a very simple style, tells the story of one young girl and her family as they interacted with the Indian tribes and the new Morman community that established itself on Beaver Island. It describes the early fishing industry, the interdependency of the settlers, transportation by boat, and the early history of the big cities of Northern Michigan. If Upper Michigan is near and dear to you, you'll enjoy this book. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2013 )
